More about Stem Cell Therapy

April 1, 2019

More about Stem Cell TherapyStem Cell therapy is a promising treatment for degenerative arthritis, bursitis, tennis/golf elbow, tendinitis, plantar fasciitis, rotator cuff tears, muscle injuries and a variety of other orthopedic conditions. The surgeons at Lederman Kwartowitz Orthopedics (LKO) are always looking for new and innovative ways to treat our patients.  Stem Cell therapy provides a minimally invasive method of promoting healing without surgery or in addition to a surgical procedure.

What are Stem Cells?

Stem cells are the undifferentiated cells of the body, meaning they can turn into other cell types.  Stem cells can be obtained from the umbilical cord, bone marrow, or adipose (fat) tissue.  The stem cells obtained from the embryonic environment are preferred to other types of stem cells for a couple of reasons: (1) The potential of stem cells is thought to decrease with age and, (2) it can be painful to extract bone marrow.

With embryonic stem cells, the baby is delivered healthy and the umbilical cord/Wharton’s jelly, which in the past were typically discarded, are collected, with maternal consent. The donors (both Mother and Father) are screened for any history of communicable diseases and behavioral risk.  Blood tests are required within 7 days before and after birth.

What to expect with Stem Cell Therapy

The procedure is similar to receiving a cortisone injection and the healing process begins immediately after the injection is given.  The patient should start to experience a reduction of pain in 2-6 weeks. Maximum improvement is not expected for 3-6 months following the injection(s).  In some cases, depending on the severity of the injury/condition being treated, an additional injection may be necessary.

Does Insurance cover Stem Cell therapy for arthritis or other ailments?

The injections that we offer our patients are FDA-compliant and processed in an FDA-registered laboratory, however, this treatment is considered experimental.  Therefore, it is not covered by insurance. The cost will vary depending on the volume and type of injection to be given. It is of utmost importance to only be treated by an orthopedic surgeon, as there are many clinics popping up promoting stem cell therapy not offered by a physician (MD/DO). Consult with one of our board-certified, fellowship-trained physicians at Lederman Kwartowitz Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine to schedule a consultation with one of our stem cell experts to find out how this treatment can benefit you: (248) 669-2000.
