Physical Medicine & Rehabilitation
Comprehensive Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation (PM&R) Care
Also known as physiatry, physical medicine and rehabilitation (PM&R) focuses on enhancing and restoring functional ability and quality of life to patients with musculoskeletal and nerve pain.
At Lederman Kwartowitz Center for Orthopedics & Sports Medicine in West Bloomfield, Michigan, board-certified physiatrist Dr. Stephen Hyman provides comprehensive PM&R services for our patients with all types of neck pain, back pain, arthritis and joint pain, overuse injuries such as tendonitis, hamstring muscle injuries, sports injuries, and more.
Dr. Hyman also specializes in electrodiagnostic medicine, a subspecialty that treats neuromuscular conditions such as:
- Carpal tunnel syndrome
- Herniated disc
- Spinal stenosis
- Peripheral neuropathy
- Complex regional pain syndrome (CRPS)
- Myofascial pain
- Phantom limb pain
- Trigeminal neuralgia
To help evaluate your pain, he may utilize electromyography (EMG) and nerve conduction studies (NCS), which record how well your muscles and nerves work.
EMG measures the electrical nerve impulses in muscles to identify poor nerve input or functioning. NCS measures how well a nerve works and can help pinpoint the site of a nerve injury. These two tests are often performed at the same time to help diagnose nerve compression or injury (such as carpal tunnel syndrome), nerve root injury (such as sciatica) or other nerve abnormalities associated with pain or numbness.
These tests enable Dr. Hyman to identify neuromuscular diseases as well as the precise causes of lumbar, thoracic, and cervical spine pain. Once Dr. Hyman makes a diagnosis, he will tailor a nonsurgical treatment plan to your specific needs.
